Avatar Technology Cures Phobias

An immersive 3D environment, similar to the technology used in the movie Avatar, will be of service in psychotherapy sessions at the University Clinic at the BBU, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Fear of heights, post traumatic stress or the fear of public speaking are symptoms that are being treated in the virtual, EON Icube environment. The cost for a therapy session is between 16 to 26 dollars.
Phobias can be treated through gradual and repeated exposure of the stimuli that produces fear.  When it comes to fear of flying, letting the client experience the actual situation is a costful and difficult process. Psychologist and project co-ordinator Daniel David  explains: "There are risks involved, panic situations can occur and the costs are high. The virtual Cube simulates in a very realistic way, the environment that could be stressful for the clients. "Virtual reality therapy corrects major limitations. Taking in account that in a virtual environment you can stop the process at any time, you can control the medium, and as a therapist I have control over the reactions and behaviour of the client."  Professor Daniel David, says. The EON ICube recently installed by EON Reality, consists of 4 walls. The Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy aims to add a 5th wall in the very near future.“The EON Icube immersive technology has already been successfully implemented in industrial training, product configuration andeducation. This is the first time the EON Icube is used in psychotherapy," said Pierre-Julien Barraud, Business Development Director for EON Reality. “We really look forward to the next steps of our collaboration and we can´t wait to see the results of the EON Icube experimentations conducted by the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy Team".
