World Success with unique solution![]()
It started at Chalmers in Gothenburg and ended with a multimillion-dollar business. A true success story about how Illuminate Labs focused on precalculated light and shadow calculations for computer games
"At first you become a world leader in something — then fun things happens. " Magnus Wennerholm lectured on Center of Visualization AGM 2011 about how a small company like Illuminate Labs entered a global market, with some of the world largest computer game companies as customers and how eventually the company was sold to Autodesk. Illuminate Labs started at Chalmers and developed a technique how to render light. After some lean years the company got new owners in 2005 that wanted to see more focus on business. - We choose to invest in the gaming industry as it´s interactivity has unique challenges compared to film, "said Magnus Wennerholm, which was the new CEO at Illuminate Labs.
The technology involved a lot more realistic gaming experience and quickly became a success. Illuminate Labs had come up with a unique solution that also coincided with the new console generation. The software was called the Beast and was developed in close cooperation with Dice, who were involved with the game Mirror's Edge. This was 2007 and when the Beast the year after was available to a wider market the company started to make money. In the period 2005-2010 Illuminate Labs was the sixth fast-growing technology company in Sweden. The development drew interest and summer of 2010 the company was sold to the American company Autodesk. Magnus Wennerholm has moved on to new challenges, but the operation is remaining in Gothenburg under a new name. - Our entire organization was lifted straight into Autodesk and was included in the media / entertainment department. It feels very good. As a small company with a narrow focus, it is difficult to survive in the long run. Magnus Wennerholm concluded: - That it went so well was because we put the business in focus. We asked ourselves what does the industry needed and how we could increase the value of our product. Picture: Magnus Wennerholm former CEO at Illuminate Labs
