(GIS)Geographical Information Systems and Science
What is GIS?
All our human activities are somehow related to a geographic location. We live and work in certain places, travel to distant countries in our holidays or plant an apple tree in our gardens. In many instances, knowledge about the location is of critical importance for our activities. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be described as is a tool that helps us to deal with all kind of geographic information, information that is connected to a place in space. ![]()
The figure shows the fundamental functions of a modern GIS including tools to handle and analyze data as well as present and visualize results. Information in a GIS is presented in different layers, where each layer represents different features such as roads, rivers, forests, built-up areas, real estate properties, etc.
