All our human activities are somehow related to a geographic location. We live and work in certain places, travel to distant countries in our holidays or plant an apple tree in our gardens. In many instances, knowledge about the location is of critical importance for our activities. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be described as is a tool that helps us to deal with all kind of geographic information, information that is connected to a place in space.
For a visitor in a foreign city an ordinary city map taken from the local Yellow Pages may serve as a simple GIS visualizing the outline of the unknown town with its buildings, streets and green areas. However, in a more technical sense, Geographic Information Systems refer to computer-based systems used to manage geographically referenced data and associated attributes. It includes tools for collecting, storing and manipulating data as well as a wide range of functions for data analysis and advanced visualization.
Since all our activities are so intimately connected to a location in space, GIS helps to improve many of our daily working and living arrangements and is an excellent tool to solve our wide-ranging real-world problems. Implementations of GIS may range from rather simple applications such as compiling a map showing certain characteristics of a landscape or environment to very advanced ones including spatial modeling, constructing scenario to predict the future or decision making processes. GIS has now found its way into various branches of society of which the most representative ones include government and public service, business, logistic and transportation as well as environmental planning.
